3rd Grade ISAT Preparations

3rd Grade ISAT Preparations

Third grade is ready to show all they’ve learned on this week’s ISAT tests.  Students are prepared to take assessments in the areas of math and reading. From math jeopardy to encouraging t-shirts, the 3M and 3L teams have spent the quality time getting ready for the big tests.  We know our math facts, we know how to understand what we read, but most importantly, we know how to think. We encourage our students to get adequate sleep and eat a healthy breakfast each morning of the ISAT Tests.

3rd Grade Science

District Goal #1: Continuously Improve Student Growth and Achievement

No worksheets, no pencils…no problem.  Third grade delved into hands on learning this Friday exploring the properties of minerals, leading small group discussions, and sharing “seashells” equally  using math manipulatives.  Students showed themselves to be self-motivated learners, skilled collaborators, and effective communicators while having fun with their learning.

Third Grade Assembly Line Project

Third grade is studying the changes of America over time.  Students have learned about major time periods during the development of our nation including the lives of Native Americans, the first colonies, the industrial revolution, and present day America. Students were able to participate in their own version of the assembly line.  They refilled crayon boxes with one crayon of each color from a large pile of crayons. Then, students worked together to sort the crayons and replace them using an assembly line approach.  Students compared and contrasted the two methods to better understand the effect of the assembly line on mass production and distribution of goods in America.

Third Grade Field Trip

District Strategic Goal #2: Create a Satisfying and Productive Classroom Learning Environment

Last Thursday, the third grade classes visited Camp Wokanda for the annual story telling festival! This story telling festival correlated to our reading and write genres and standards. Students in third grade are expected to read and learn about various types of stories, personal narratives, historical fiction, realistic fiction and more! Attending the festival was a great way to see our learning applied in a meaningful way! We saw some unique instruments, listened to entertaining stories, and most importantly, we learned how to make our own stories even more interesting!

Third grade used Legos to create buildings and divide them into three areas:  a city, a suburb, and a rural area.  Students were able to add appropriate stores or other public buildings to each area by researching the typical components of each in their social studies books.  Students will use their new knowledge tomorrow to explain their opinion on which area they’d like to live when they grow up.

Third Grade Memories

Third Grade Top Memories

  1.  Field trip to Camp Wokonda—What a great way to kick off the year and inspire some truly excellent story writing.  Listening to some master story tellers kick-started our own ideas and helped us get to know each other early on.
  2. First ISAT – The third graders prepared weekly with Study Island, extended response practice and more until they were ready to rock the ISAT in March.  We even made motivational t-shirts to keep our spirits up during the week of testing.
  3. Science – Third grade science is always a student favorite.  They now know how to create a closed circuit, identify metamorphic rock, and even describe the interdependence of bees and flowers.
  4. STAR time – Each day students were able to get help in the areas they showed the most need.  From math to fluent reading, third grade has really been able to hone their skills and get ready for next year.
  5. Reading conferences – We began the year with guided reading in small groups.  Student kept a log to summarize their independent reading.  Throughout the year, and inspired by our Regie Routman Professional Development, third grade has transitioned to more independent reading practices.  Students now choose their own books, conference with the teacher one-on-one, and share their reading through book talks with the class.
  6. Still to come —  Students are currently writing super hero stories of epic proportions.  They will have a chance to create a their own life-size superhero to go along with their story.  We can’t wait to share the results!

3rd Grade Technology Project

District Strategic Goal #1: Continuously Improve Student Growth and Achievement

Recently the third grade classes have been completing PowerPoint presentations on endangered animals in technology class.  This project allowed the students the opportunity to use previously learned skills such as formatting skills learned using Word and researching skills. In addition, students learned new skills in how to make a presentation presentable.  These new skills focused on students understanding that the purpose of a presentation is to communicate a message.  They also were able to “present” their presentations by recording their voices and automatically timing the slides. This gave them the opportunity to work on their presentation/communication skills without the “stage fright” of standing up in front of the class and get some experience recording their voices using the microphone booms on the headsets.

3rd Grade Government Study

District Strategic Goal #1: Continuously Improve Student Growth and Achievement

Third grade is currently studying government in social studies. Officer Burns stopped by this afternoon to share some of the duties that police officers have. 3M and 3L learned how police officers keep communities safe by enforcing the laws! Officer Burns answered questions, presented information to students about his career, and reminded us how important all roles are in the community and government.

3rd Grade St. Jude Project

The Dunlap School District vision seeks to create self-motivated learners. A recent project initiated by a group of third grade students demonstrates the power that our young students can have on the community and others through their own motivation. The students of 3M organized a toy drive to help the children at St. Jude. The students created a presentation and went to every classroom to share their plan. Last week, the Dunlap Grade School students brought in a total of 136 toys! We are proud of our students for their initiative and willingness to help other children in need. They have made an impact!
