Honoring the Voice of Students: Simple Strategies to try TOMORROW!

Have students record the voicemail greeting for the school. When you call DGS after hours the voicemail greeting activates. Instead of an adult greeting the caller, you will hear a student. “Thank you for calling Dunlap Grade, a school that LOVES their students. Sorry we missed your call! Please leave a message and we will call you as soon as we can! Go Be a Royal!” It is a simple strategy that tells your caller that you are a student centered and student focused school that literally wants their students’ voices heard! Encourage students to greet others at morning drop-off. This is one of my favorites. It’s an easy way to start the day on a positive note, encourage leadership, and develop relationships between students and with parents. You can choose to do this every day, certain days of the week, or for special events or occasions. Students can hold the doors, pass out positive notes, or assist younger students into the building.

Provide purpose and value to students with special jobs or incentives. One job could be to deliver the mail to staff. With a re-purposed library cart and baskets, we made the student job of mail carrier. Each day before dismissal, a student delivers mail to boxes outside classrooms. This ensures any last minute fliers, handouts or information is sent home in student backpacks.

Send a picture of your school mascot home and have students share pictures with it at the school hashtag. Our school mascot, Crownie, has been to Space Camp, on a Disney Cruise, skiing in Colorado, the Lego Store in California, professional football games, on an ATV, climbing trees, out to dinner, and so much more. It’s as simple as students taking the picture of the mascot with them on their travels and adventures and posting them (or having their parents post them) to school social media accounts. If they prefer, parents are also welcome to email them to the school or send hard copies that we display in the hallway. It’s a simple way to connect students to learning, the school, and each other!

Invite Students to Eat Lunch with You in Your Office. I’m always surprised at what I learn about students by spending twenty minutes with them over their lunch period in small groups. I’ve gained insights into their academic needs, social needs, and home life. It builds relationships, but also gives you a pulse onto how things are going and what you can do to change or do better.

Have students lead morning announcements. We complete morning announcements as a whole school in the gym, but this would work rather you do them over an intercom or record them to share via video. What better way to promote communication and public speaking skills than to build the capacity of student leaders through delivering the announcements. Students rotate through weekly assignments to deliver the lunch menu, celebrate birthdays, announce any classrooms or students that have met goals, and to lead the Pledge.

Call Home. The authors of “Kids Deserve It,” Adam Welcome and Todd Neosley, use this strategies to build relationships with kids and celebrate their accomplishments. One of my favorite strategies is to call home with the child next to me to celebrate their success or place the child on the phone to tell them about their celebration in the middle of the day. When a kid is in my office sharing their news with their parents with the biggest grin on their face, it brings joy to us all. This can be accomplished informally when a teacher sends a kid to the office for a positive office referral or when I am walking into classrooms and see positive things going on. A positive note or call from a principal or teacher goes a long way!

Remind them with visuals that they are important, valued, and cared for. With donated mirrors painted our school colors, we created a gallery wall to remind students that they are ROYALS! As students glimpse into the mirrors as they pass them in the hallway, they are reminded about the tenants of our school: To Respect Others, Yourself and Learning!

Parent Lunch and Learn: Sailing the Seas of Literacy

literacy-lunch-and-learnDunlap Grade School hosted its first “Lunch in Learn” of the series on November 16, 2016. The topic of the month was focused on literacy and fostering a love of reading at home. 2nd Grade Teacher, Mrs. Pitzer, facilitated a parent discussion on essentials of reading, ideas, and resources. This event was intended to engage parents in a learning opportunity to extend teaching practices in the home. In addition to the resources shared, parents were given copies of several books to support reading at home! You can view the Facebook LIVE Video HERE

We will continue the Lunch and Learn series in December with the topic of “Educational Gift Giving” on December 14th at 11am.

DGS Royal Playscape and Science Learning Center

After being inspired by the beautiful Outdoor Nature Explore Classroom at Northminster Learning Center, I wanted to bring elements of a nature based play area at Dunlap Grade School. We’ve started phase one of our project by adding the Royal River Bed Playscape. This area allows students to jump, crawl, and hop from stump to stump through a stream of wooden stumps. The project started out with a donation of time from our wonderful Village Maintenance staff and included a weekend of work time by myself and my evening custodian.

Additions to the playscape include three nature explore tables that will allow students to create, investigate and observe materials in their natural world.

The fifth graders also built and are using a microinverebrate manor to observe the world of insects and plant life around them. They carefully monitor the variables that sustain life and make scientific hypotheses about the impact the environment has on the species in the manor. This is correlated to the Next Generation Science Standards and provides meaningful opportunities for observation, investigation, and writing.

Our third graders wrote a grant and planted a beautiful native plant butterfly garden. Our 2nd grade classes use it annually to release their butterflies. It is a gorgeous addition to the play scape that continually changes throughout the season.

Tires were placed around a mature tree in the play scape. Seemingly unimportant at first glance, they serve as “Little World” play areas for our younger students. Our children that prefer quiet or independent play activities can use the materials in the tires to immerse themselves in imaginative play. Each tire is filled with different materials and supplies for children to play with: trucks, dinosaurs, insects, shells, and people.

Finally, we installed a Free Little Library in the front of the school this summer. We are adding a second library to the rear of the building to provide students the opportunity to read during their independent play time. Benches and seating areas are embedded around the area for students to access.

These materials do not replace the typical playground equipment that our students also have access to, rather they supplement it and provide students additional outlets for play and exploration.

Promoting Positive School Communication with Video Updates

I recently read the book and blog “Your School Rocks: Passionately Pitch and Promote the Positives Happening on Your Campus.” The authors shared a simple way to publish video newsletters and I was instantly inspired. You will now see a green screen and tripod in my office that are accessible to staff and your students should they also want to do something similar or have their own idea. You can read about the process I gleaned the inspiration from on their blog at: http://www.yourschoolrocks.com/2015/10/creating-video-newsletter.html

I plan on using the video screen and video updates in multiple ways:
1. To update staff in my Friday Focus staff memo with “Great Things I’ve Seen this Week” My inaugural attempt at this is shown in the video below. These will be cataloged in my YouTube Channel and shared with staff as part of their weekly updates. I am deliberate and strategic in ensuring that I continue to model innovative and creative ways to use technology and apply them in effective and meaningful ways. The video is then embedded into the remaining notes and information shared on a SMORE page (as seen after the video)

2. To engage students in “Royal News Updates” on a weekly basis. I started this today and the students did a wonderful job and were excited to share their learning. I created a format for them to follow as they shared the highlights of the week with staff, families and friends.
[embeddoc url=”https://dunlapgradeschool.edublogs.org/files/2016/01/Dunlap-Grade-School-Royal-Review-2978tie.pdf” viewer=”google”]

3. To promote reading with guest read alouds that will be shared on our social media (twitter, youtube, facebook). I have done this several time and just uploaded videos straight from my camera
You can view a project I did with two members of service and leadership club in the video below. This project took less than 10 minutes of editing time from the moment they finished recording until I uploaded it and shared it on YouTube.

I used the App Green Screen by Do Ink to format the background and iMovie to edit the videos.

This process really is easy and affordable. I purchased a green screen and tripod on Amazon for less than $125.00. My tripod included a bluetooth remote that allows me to simply start and stop the video record component on my iPhone or iPad. The cost of the Green Screen App is $2.99. iMovie, YouTube, Facebook, SMORE, and Twitter are all free and efficient and effective ways to communicate with families and the community about the positive and amazing things that are going on in our building everyday!

2nd Graders on the Farm

District Strategic Goal #2: Create a Satisfying and Productive Classroom Learning Environment

2nd Grade Students at DGS took hands-on learning to a new level when they visited Linden Hills Dairy Farm on Thursday. 2nd Graders learned first hand about milk production, life-cycles, and farm life. The children were actively engaged in learning as they got up close and personal with horses, cows, goats, and chickens. The field trip reinforced several of their science learning objectives as well as vocabulary terms that have been taught throughout the year. Learn more about Linden Hills Farm here or view the video below.

Class Dojo

District Strategic Goal #2

Create a satisfying and productive classroom learning environment

to learn more about what is going on at DGS, read below and like us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/dunlapgrade

All students at DGS are finding their greatness and emerging as quality kids. 2nd Grade Classrooms at DGS are using Class Dojo to track their behavior and document their positive choices. Below are the students who met their individual behavior goal for last week in 2Z. They achieved a score of 85% or higher of positive points. ClassDojo is a classroom tool that helps teachers improve behavior in their classrooms quickly and easily. It also captures and generates data on behavior that teachers can share with parents and administrators. Research suggests the shorter the time period between an action and feedback for that action, the greater is the effect of the reinforcement. Specific positive reinforcement helps students develop a sense of purpose in the classroom, enhancing intrinsic motivation over time. By giving students visibility and data on their own behavior, ClassDojo makes class less disruptive and creates a more positive learning environment (www.classdojo.com)

Congratulations to these students for making positive choices and continuing to be quality kids!

Valentine Fractions

District Goal #2:
Create a Satisfying and Productive Classroom Learning Environment

What a better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than to learn about sweet fractions! In our Math in Focus curriculum, 4th grade is currently learning about fractions and how to add and subtract them. To practice this, 4th grade students were given candy hearts in groups of 2 and were asked to find different fractions. Students had to figure out what fraction of their candies were a certain color. They then had to count out a number of candies and determine what number would be ¼ of the candies, 1/3 and so on. The best part for them was not just the reinforcement of learning fractions but also eating them when they were finished!

2nd and 3rd Grade Music Program

The District’s Vision strives to create effective communicators and 21st century globally aware citizens. Last Night’s 2nd and 3rd Grade music program at Dunlap Grade showcased students as they sang songs to “Teach the World to Sing” and all about “Inventions that Rock.” Thanks to Mrs. Karen Austin-Joslin for directing a fantastic program, our teaching staff that assisted in organizing our students, and parents that supported the students to be successful!
